Heart of the Nation: Musical Encore

As the Migration Museum’s Heart of the Nation exhibition says goodbye to Leicester, join us one last time for music and melodies from tabla player Jasjit Singh and performer Sandeep Singh Kandola. Experience the soothing sound of classical South Asian instruments as they fill the gallery on the final day of the exhibition run: Sunday 29 October 2023.

This is a free drop-in event, with live music from 11.30am–1pm.

About the performers

Jasjit Singh is a classically trained tabla player from Birmingham. He has been training since childhood and teaches in the local community. Committed to educating the next generation of students, Jasjit is a Maths teacher, former structural engineer and spends his time teaching tabla. He also holds a weekly class at the Ramgarhia Sikh Temple, Jewellery Quarter where he often participates in Sikh devotional music. Jasjit has spent his life learning the intricacies of Hindustani Classical music and also light elements of taal-vidya. He is currently performing with sitarist Akash Parekar, the Tablajedis, and light-classical work in conjunction with Leicester-based Sarangi player Sandeep Kandola.

Sandeep Singh Kandola originally started learning the dhadi sangeet tradition of sarangi from late Bhai Sarban Singh Gill in 2008. He then began to take guidance from world renowned Ustad Dharambir Singh in 2012. Sandeep currently plays in the band String Beats, as well as teaching Mathematics at Babington Academy in Beaumont Leys, Leicester.

This event has been made possible by an award from People’s Postcode Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
