Event Description

Experience African Culture in the heart of Leicester

Black History Month at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery

As part of our celebration of Black History Month, Leicester Museum and Gallery is working in partnership with Afro Innovation Group (AIG)  to provide visitors with a chance to experience African culture in the heart of Leicester.

Available throughout October, our ‘Object of the Month’ for October will feature rarely seen African masks, acquired by Leicester Museums in 1980. The masks have been chosen by AIG, who have also provided new context and interpretation.

Saturday 11th October

Join us for a full day of celebration, performances and family activities. Expect:

  • Traditional music, dancing & singing throughout the museum

  • Storytelling in the Leicester Stories Gallery

  • Rarely seen Tanzanian masks from the 1980s, reinterpreted with fresh community insight

  • Family-friendly activities open to all

All activities are free of charge and include Swahili/Bantu, Congolese, Moroccan, Ethiopian and Eritrean performers.

This programme is part of the Afro Heritage Project, led by Afro Innovation Group (AIG), supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, in partnership with Leicester Museums & Galleries.

Everyone’s welcome, come celebrate with us!
