Roots of Our Tree - King Richard III Project

10 Year Anniversary

Roots of our Tree marks the 10th anniversary of Richard III's reinterment, exploring what the discovery of the Last Plantagenet King means to young people from across Leicester, and how this internationally significant archaeological discovery inspired them to research their own ancestry. A three month series of workshops led to a procession with over 300 young people in the City Centre as part of Light Up Leicester 2025.

Light Up Leicester

A light up installation was presented at King Richard III Visitor Centre and Leicester Cathedral. Inspired by King Richard III's 'KRIII' cypher and the leaves of the oak, Britain's most beloved tree, the installation symbolises a family tree that connects our diverse communities - telling the past and present story of our historic city.

The installation has been produced and commissioned by Inspirate and Leicester City Council, as part of Light Up Leicester, designed and built by artist Tom Cleaver, created in collaboration with Year 4 and 5 pupils from Mellor, Sparkenhoe and Spinney Hill Primary, Queensmead Academy, as well as community members from Belgrave Library, Highfields Centre and Pedestrian.

Supported by Arts Council England and National Lottery Heritage Fund.
