Object of the Month: September 2026

I can’t remember a time when I couldn’t sew and have always admired fine stitching, like the embroidered scenes on this glove. The glove must have been stored out of bright light as the silks still retain the bright colours, they were dyed with over 300 years ago. I love the variety of tiny stitches that cleverly portray the different water birds and the zig zag lines used to depict the flowing water.

The looped chains around each scene are worked in metallic thread and silver sequins appear to have been scattered over the surface. The glove would have been more decorative than practical and made by professional embroiderers.
