Dawson, from Hull, was brought up in Nottingham and worked as a 'twist hand' in a lace factory, painting in his spare time. From 1835 he painted full-time and in 1849 moved to London. His eldest son Henry Thomas was a marine painter.

Henry Dawson painted three versions of the same subject - a 19th century view of the River Thames, London at sunset.

This impressive painting can be seen in the Victorian Art Gallery at Leicester Museums & Art Gallery which aims to reopen to visitors from 21st June 2021.
