Overview

Leicester Museum & Art Gallery and Newarke Houses are looking for Gallery Engagement volunteers who can help museum visitors access our exhibitions and collections. Based on gallery and supported by the museums team, volunteers use their knowledge and skills to engage visitors with the stories behind the collections on display.

Volunteers can select their shifts and preferred site, based on their availability, interests and expertise. Volunteers are also able to volunteer at specialist exhibitions where they can help visitors engage with displays, handling collections and museum interactives. Volunteers must have excellent customer service skills and confidence when engaging with the general public.

Main duties

Meeting and greeting visitors in galleries who would like further information or interpretation and answer questions that people may have about the collection and exhibits. Volunteers have an in-depth understanding of the collections and refer people to a member of staff if they are unable to provide accurate information. Volunteers act as the public face of the museum and feedback information and learning about user experience to staff.

Skills needed

An enthusiastic interest in the museum and its exhibits. Excellent interpersonal skills. Able to communicate effectively with different audiences. Willing to learn about the museum collections. Reliable. Able to be part of a team.
