MARY ANNIE SLOANE A.R.E

“A Fine Discerning Eye”

A talk by Leicester based art-historian Simon Lake

Mary Annie Sloane (1867-1961) was one of Leicestershire’s most distinguished artists. She worked at a time when opportunities for women to develop a career were extremely limited and few female artists, however talented, were given due recognition.

Born in 1867 to wealthy parents with a liberal outlook, Mary was encouraged on an artistic path early on. She attended the Belmont House School, Leicester, and the Leicester School of Art, before moving to London in 1887. She attended Herkomer’s School in Bushey, Herts; later joining Sir Frank Short’s etching class at the Royal College of Art, London. In 1912 she became an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter’s, Etchers and Engravers (ARE). She formed lasting artistic friendships and networks, notably with May Morris, daughter of William Morris, father of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

Mary Sloane’s subjects included Leicestershire framework knitters working in their cottages, weavers in London, portraiture, interiors and many views of town and country. These were captured in her oil paintings, watercolours and in many etchings.

Born in Gloucester, Simon Lake studied Fine Art & Art History at Manchester Metropolitan University before further postgraduate training in art restoration, and later Museum Studies.

After a number of years as Curator of Fine Art for Leicester Museums, he is now a freelance researcher and speaker across a wide spectrum of art-historical themes.
