The Story Of Palitoy - From an old boarding house to a galaxy far far away

The Story Of Palitoy - From an old boarding house to a galaxy far far away.

Palitoy began as a Cascelloid in Leicestershire in 1919. The first toy was made in 1920 and the first doll in 1925. The Palitoy name was first used in 1937 when soft-bodied dolls were first made in Coalville. Cascelloid concentrated on its industrial products and Palitoy became American owned in 1968 and went on to become the leading UK Toy company until 1985. The American owners decided to get out of the toy business to concentrate on it’s core food business and Palitoy became Kenner Parker.

Bob Brechin is the former Chief Designer at Palitoy. Joining the company in 1967, he left when the design department closed down in 1984, the same year as Action Man was “demobbed”.

The illustrated talk starts in those days after the Great War of 1914-18 and explores how developments in plastics, and the processing techniques involved, turned an emerging “cottage industry” into what became a multi-million dollar, multi-national marketing operation.
