By the 1920s, Lincolnshire’s sand dunes contained a ramshackle array of structures used as holiday homes, made of an incredible range of recycled materials. The Sandhills Act of 1932 gave a council powers to remove these “eyesores” and restrict development in the name of conservation and so created much of the East Coast we know and love today.

About Susan Barton:

Dr Susan Barton is a historian of social, cultural and economic history and an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at De Montfort University. Her many published works focus on the international history of tourism, the seaside, holidays with pay, winter sports and some local studies. A former Lord Mayor of Leicester, she is currently the city’s Heritage Champion.
