Coming Soon! Ugandan Asian 50th Anniversary Public Art Commission

Leicester City Council has announced plans for a permanent sculpture or artwork in the city, created with the involvement of the city’s Ugandan Asian community.

Leicester Museums & Galleries is in the process of considering different artists’ ideas and designs for this new piece of public art, which will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the arrival of thousands of Ugandan Asian families to Leicester.

This new piece of public art is due to be designed and installed as part of a wide-ranging programme of “Uganda 50” events in 2022. This city-wide project will reflect on both the arrival of thousands of Ugandan Asians to Leicester in 1972, and the vital contribution they have made to the city’s unique identity since then.

More information on this public art commission will be published soon.
