Explore the Earth: A Billion Years in Your Hands

From Monday 19th October 2026, a team of volunteers, in partnership with PCSB Geology Society from the University of Leicester, will be on gallery giving our visitors a chance to get up close with dozens of real specimen objects. Learn about the rock cycle , different types of rocks, how they form and change, and how that reflects the environment of the past.

With collection highlights focusing on the Leicestershire story with specimens showing Leicestershire when we had local volcanoes, deserts, tropical reefs and so on!This activity is run by our student volunteers and is dependent on their availability.
