Description

An exhibition commemorating, congratulating, and celebrating the Windrush Generation

Leicester Windrush Memories

This exhibition is dedicated to the Windrush Generation who responded to the invitation to come and re-build Britain after the Second World War. An exhibition commemorating, congratulating, and celebrating their lives and contributions to our city.

Presented by Kainé and the Better Together project.

Kainé are a Leicester-based arts, education and community organisation dedicated to empowering people through creativity, culture, and connections. For over two decades, we have implemented inclusive programmes that celebrate heritage, nurture talent, and strengthen community wellbeing. Rooted in African and Caribbean traditions, we bring people together through music, education, intergenerational engagement, and community cohesion, creating spaces where stories are honoured and voices are heard.

The Better Together project is our tribute to the Windrush Generation. It elevates the lived experiences of Caribbean elders by preserving and celebrating the personal histories, cultural memories, and the resilience of those who helped rebuild post-war Britain. Through interviews, creative workshops, and community gatherings, the project both documents the legacy of Windrush pioneers, while enhancing their own lives with new experiences and opportunities.

At its core, the project celebrates belonging, identity, and contribution. It ensures that the sacrifices, achievements, and cultural richness of the Windrush Generation are recognised, valued, and passed on.
This exhibition showcases their stories with dignity and pride—honouring the past, inspiring the present, and strengthening the future of our shared community.
